Abstract/Contents:"Differences in cold tolerance of St. Augustinegrass cultivars have been observed, but actual field data is limited and difficult to obtain. A severe winter can completely kill test plots and thus prevent progeny evaluations needed for a genetic study. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) was used to determine a mean freezing temperature of nodes of 14 genotypes of St. Augustinegrass. Freezing means were found to be significantly different, ranging from -7.81 to -4.86 C. Field observations of spring green-up were taken from the Mississippi location of the National St. Augustinegrass Trial-1989 which contained 27 genotypes and a germplasm evaluation trial containing 38 entries consisting of plant introductions, ecotypes, and standard commercial cultivars. Significant differences in spring green-up means were observed in both trials for each of 2 years. All of the genotypes on which DTA was run were included in one or both of the two field trials. Correlations between DTA freezing temperature means of each line and green-up ratings from the two field trials were significant with r-square values of 0.64 and 0.96 for the national trial and the germplasm evaluation trial respectively."
