Abstract/Contents: | "Fall-winter applications of soluble N alone enhanced color and bentgrass root growth. Late spring nitrogen application improved turf appearance and top growth but severely reduced root growth. Frequent fall and winter application of nitrogen in combination with iron enhanced turf appearance, chlorophyll content, spring top growth and winter desiccation recovery without decreasing root growth or plant carbohydrates. The synergistic effect of iron when applied in combination with nitrogen in late spring and compared to N alone, reduced top growth slightly, provided excellent appearance and increased root development without further depletion of carbohydrates, irrespective of winter fertilization. An additional study showed root development was enhanced with a heavy late fall-winter N regime when compared to a heavy early spring N regime. Iron application increased rooting under both N regimes; however, when nitrogen was heavily applied in late fall, roots tended to be heavier with increased iron applications. Turf appearance in March was best when fertilized with N in late fall-early winter. Under both nitrogen regimes the addition of iron enhanced appearance. No significant difference was evident in April, but in May, the appearance was somewhat better with the heavy spring than the heavy fall N fertilization. By June the early spring N regime showed no improved bentgrass appearance over the late fall fertilizer regime. Applications of N on bentgrass in February decreased root growth and resistance to summer desiccation when compared to January applications. Better root systems were obtained with chelated iron than with iron sulfate when the late fall nitrogen regime was employed. The opposite was true with the early spring N regime." |
