Abstract/Contents: | "Centipedegrass is progressively becoming a more popular home lawn grass in the Southern U.S.A. Although centipedegrass has emerged as an important turfgrass for home lawns, it has some major weaknesses. Presently the most prevelant problem is inconsistent winter survival. Many management factors seem to contribute to this problem and. it is generally conceded that the problem is caused by an interaction of several factors. Among the least understood of these factors is the relationship of mineral nutrition to winter survival. Experiments were initiated in both the greenhouse and field to study the effects of nitrogen and potassium nutrition on net photosynthesis, respiration, and carbohydrate metabolism of centipedegrass. Centipedegrass sod and tillers were placed in plexiglass chambers and net photosynthesis and respiration were determined with an infrared C02 analyzer. Percent TAC, reducing and non-reducing sugars were determined in the stolons. Increasing N fertilization decreased the percent TAC but generally increased net photosynthesis and respiration. Reducing and nonreducing sugars decreased with increasing K over all N rates." |
