Abstract/Contents: | "The Prescription Athletic Turf (PAT) System combines 11 items to make 9 features. Take 11 items - Pumps, collector drains, plastic sheeting, sand, peat, calcined aggregates, slow release fertilizers, soil heating cables, vented plastic covers, power rollers and adapted vigorous grasses, and make 9 features - Suction pumping - as needed; Level fields - water moves down; Water conservation - outflow control; Subsurface watering, as needed; Nutrient conservation - above plastic; Porous rootzone - ample air; Heat adding - keep soil thawed; Heat conservation - reduce frost, and Wear-resistant sod - increased growth. Thus, the extremes of the very wet, very cold, very dry, or very hot are counteracted and minimized. If it's raining - turn on the suction pumps: If it's cold - turn on soil warming! If it's dry - sub-irrigate - even during use! If it's hot - favor evapotranspiration by increased water supply. Diaphragm type suction pumps, creating 4 to 6" mercury suction have acted to remove excess surface water, when artifically [artificially] applied, in less than 15 minutes. Within 1 hour heavy rains formerly trapped in the sand layer can be completely removed by pumping. Foreman Field, High School, Goshen, Indiana, including 36,000 sq. ft. was finished July, '72. Grand Valley College Field, Allendale, Michigan, 62,000 sq. ft. was sodded September 14, 1972 - both have performed well. A patent has been applied for through Purdue Research Foundation, and licensing from them is available to architects and engineers." |
