| Abstract/Contents: | "A basal stem and crown rot affecting Kentucky bluegrass has increased greatly in importance in southern California during the last 3 years. The disease occurs wherever bluegrass is grown, especially where soil moisture is low and the plants are stressed for moisture. The disease is caused by Fusarium roseum f. sp. cerealis 'Culmorum,' the cause of Fusarium blight in the midwestern and eastern U.S. Unlike the disease elsewhere, the fungus rarely attacks the leaf blades, but the disease is usually lethal because the stem base and crown are extensively invadeds resulting in a hard, dark brown to black, dry rot. Infected plants succumb rapidly in the summer heat but tend to recover as the temperature drops because the newly formed tillers are usually healthy. Bluegrass varieties appear to differ in their susceptibility to the disease in the field: Park, Campus, and Windsor appear very susceptible and FyIking resistant. Frequent irrigation, which tends to keep the thatch moist, reduces the incidence and severity of the disease." |
