Abstract/Contents:"An attempt was made to intercross 10 superior St. Augustinegrass selections in a polycross manner but failed due to sporatic [sporadic] flowering of the clones. Consequently the flowering response of St. Augustinegrass was studied in the field and greenhouse. Under South Florida conditions, all clones produced the maximum number of inflorescenses during June and July. However, some clones not involved in this study were observed to flower year-round in the field. A photoperiodic study involving 8-, 10-, 12-, and 14-hour photoperiods confirmed that all plants flowered best at 14-hours, but 3 clones flowered under all photoperiods. Maximum flowering at the 14-hour photoperiod occurred 6 to 7 weeks after initiation of the study. Another study involved floral induction to maximize uniform flowering in the greenhouse. The best response was obtained by pre-conditioning the clones for a 3-week period at 8-hour photoperiods of 24 C with 10 C nights followed by 7-weeks at 27 C with 2 hours of light at mid-night."
