Abstract/Contents: | "It is difficult to grow satisfactory turfgrass in an area of transition between cool, humid and warm,, humid conditions in the Eastern United States. In this area, warm-season grasses have a long dormant period and may be subject to winter injury and cool-season grasses do poorly because of summer dormancy, drought and periods when temperature and humidity are relatively high. Recommendations and performance of turfgrass species in Virginia are reviewed and illustrated with emphasis on the use of and problems with Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis L., in the transition zone. An approach to improvement of Kentucky bluegrass is presented which involves the collection and evaluation of clonal selections from turfgrass areas that have had long-time exposure to heat and drought stress. These clones could be of value as improved strains or as parents for bluegrass hybrids from which desirable type may be selected. Techniques for the field and laboratory evaluation of large numbers of strains under conditions of stress are reviewed. Data on techniques that have been used are discussed and these and other suggested processes are considered." |
