Abstract/Contents:"A review of the published and unpublished data on the use of wetting agents (surfactants) shows large differences in adsorptive characteristics of different types of wetting agents; improved wetting, infiltration, and drainage; reduced bulk density of compacted loam soil; reduced soil moisture tensions; more uniform distribution of soil moisture in the profile; and reduced avaporative losses (35%) for properly treated soils. Laboratory and field data indicate that 3 ppm of wetting agent is too little and that 15 to 30 ppm is required. Phytotoxocity data show large differences both between types of wetting agents and between wetting agents of a given type. The nonionic wetting agents were the safest. Greenhouse data indicate a 30 to 50% reduction in water required and an improved intercellular structure of grass plants. These data are interpreted and related to turfgrass management for golf courses, landscaping, tennis courts and athletic fields on the bases of a 15-years field uses.
