Abstract/Contents: | "The use of growth retardants such as malic hydrazide has been restricted primarily to turf for roadsides, bank stabilization, and similar uses where top quality is not required. In order for growth retardants to be useful on fine quality turfs they must not adversely affect color, density (tiller and rhizome initiation) and root growth. A number of new growth retardants have been developed in recent years of which studies on principally three are discussed in this paper. These are 3-Trifluoromethylsulfonamido- p-acetotoluidide (Sustar), a-cyclopropyl-a-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5- pyrimidinemethanol ( Quel) and (2-chloroethyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CCC). Most of the studies were conducted in the greenhouse under controlled environments. Specific measurements included tiller counts, tiller bud counts, root weights, top weights, internode lengths, and node numbers. Shoot and root apices and other tissues were examined under the microscope. Stimulation of tillering by CCC was observed on some species. High light intensity appeared to be a critical factor determining this reaction. Internode length was reduced but number of nodes was unchanged. Moderate reduction of root weight but no apparent root injury resulted from the CCC treatments. Leaf color was intensified by CCC. Quel was highly effective in reducing internode lengths and leaf length but did not effect tillering. Color was unchanged. Sustar reduced internode and leaf length but produced some discoloration and tissue malformation. These studies show considerable promise for growth retardants on fine turf. However, the value of any material will depend upon the grass species being grown, timing of application, and interaction with environmental factors as well as rates and methods of application." |
