Abstract/Contents: | "A national sampling of retail lawnseed offering in ten representative market areas was extensively analyzed for quality features, and the products rated accordingly. In addition to customary purity and germination standards, the offerings were criticized for reasonableness of composition (for the climate where offered) and the probable influence of improved cultivars; noxious weeds, other weeds, and crop 'weeds', -- all of which are identified by name verified by registered seed technologists; and adequacy of instructions (an honesty of label). Many of these features have been ignored in conventional handling of lawnseed, but will become earmarks of quality in the future. Unidentified crop inclusions and (occasional) poor choice of components appear to be the most frequent or serious detriments. However, compared to average lawnseed quality only a few years ago remarkable advances have been made, and progress is shaping up with more sophisticated quality features heretofore ignored as overly abstruse. These are discussed in depth, and their relative importance evaluated. Charts and data summaries indicate just which are the most frequent and serious weed and crop offenders (or other deficiencies) in lawnseed offered to the American public." |
