| Abstract/Contents: | "Several field trials were established in California to evaluate the cutting quality of perennial ryegrass varieties alone and in combination with seeding rate and fertility variables. Cutting quality was measured by a visual score based on the cleanness of cut following mowing with a rotary mower. The trials span a four year period and range from the San Francisco Bay Area to Southern California. It was found that varieties varied significantly in their cutting quality response with newer 'turf-type' perennial ryegrasses showing the best cutting characteristics. The seeding rate influenced the early cutting quality of the varieties Lamora, NK 100 and Pelo; however, the seeding rate did not affect the performance of other varieties in the test. Fertility variables had some influence on cutting quality but not at the level that had been previously anticipated." |
