Abstract/Contents: | "Poa annua plants were selected from seven sportsturf sites in Wales and western England. The chosen sites comprised three soccer pitches, one cricket outfield, two golf greens (from different courses) and one bowling green. At each site plants were selected on the basis of uniform morphological characteristics. Tillers produced by the parent plants when grown under identical conditions in the glasshouse were split off and used in an experiment to examine their response to variations in nitrogen supply level and cutting height. Experimental plants were grown in acid washed sand and supplied with a modified Long Ashton nutrient solution. Three nitrogen supply levels were used (1, 4 and 10mM) and plants were clipped at 1,2 or 4 cm height every third day. There were three replicates of the nine treatments. Agrostis tenuis "Highland" was also included in the experiment for comparison. The following parameters were recorded: root length, root dry weight, yield of tops, tiller number, leaf width, number of leaves per tiller and number of seedheads produced. The data obtained indicate a considerable range in character of P. annua found on different sportsturf sites reflecting genetic variation within the species and selection due to differences in sportsturf management." |
