Abstract/Contents:"Adequacy and utility of turfgrass cultivars are determined by the interaction of their genetic potential for growth with conditions of season and environment. For Poa pratensis in the transition zone of the United States this often includes satisfactory performance during and recovery from summer heat and drought conditions. Poa pratensis cultivars are usually evaluated in replicated trials as small (2 x 3 m or less) plots and some predetermined level of turfgrass management for several years. Cultivars are scored for appearance, color, ground cover, density, damage from disease and insects, thatch buildup, and other characteristics. Trials at several locations or with more than one level of management give additional performance data for cultivar recommendations. To obtain additional data on a group of more than 40 Poa pratensis cultivars and experimental strains, studies were conducted with sod removed from established turf plots. These were evaluated for differences in tolerance to imposed heat, drought, shade, and wear stress. Differences between strains was also found for spring and summer sod strength, rooting ability, and rhizome development. Information derived from these experiments indicate that blends of several cultivars should provide better overall turf quality than a mono-cultivar turf. Knowledge of the performance of specific cultivars will be useful formulating blends."
