Abstract/Contents: | "The performance under tree cover of 15 turf species each represented by one or several varieties was studied in two trials in 1974. One is on the property of Ets VILMORIN, near Angers in the Loire Valley, on sandy acid soil and under both leafy and resinous trees; the other is at Poi tiers on a rather clay soil under a very heavy leafy cover. After 2 years of observation it is clear that heavy shading is detrimental for in both trials the majority of the cultivars have disappeared, despite a satisfactory establishment. At Poitiers, while most cultivars of Festuca rubra, F. arundinacea, Lolium perenne und Poa trivialis still performed reasonably after one year, only a few cultivars of F. rubra, F. commutata (especially), P. trivialis and one of F. heterophylla persist at present. P. trivialis and P. annua invade the degenerated areas. Near Angers, after one year only Cynosurus cristatus, P. pratensis, P. trivialis had disappeared, but at present only Agrostis sp., F. rubra litoralis and L. perenne (Manhattan) remain. The other species have practically disappeared and have been replaced by P. annua. In both cases it is apparent that C. cristatus, F. ovina sp., Phleum bertolonii and P. pratensis are of no interest. The same is true of F. heterophylla and P. nemoralis, species normally recognised as undergrowth plants." |
