Abstract/Contents: | "Colonial bentgrass (Agrostis tenuis Sibth.), although not thought to be native to America, is widely distributed throughout Northeastern United States. Until the advent of leafspot - resistant Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) during the 1950's Colonial bentgrass was widely used throughout the region for turfgrass purposes. For most turfgrass purposes Colonial bentgrass has been replaced by Kentucky bluegrass. This is despite the fact that bentgrass appears more adapted to the soils and climate of Northeastern United States than does Kentucky bluegrass. This occurrance [occurrence] may be the result of lack of knowledge regarding proper maintenance of colonial bentgrass. In order to learn more about maintenance requirements of colonial bentgrass, mown at 1.3 to 1.7 cm, a study was started at the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station. A three-way factorial experimental design was utilized on a block of the Exeter variety seeded in 1966. Test variables included three mower types, three thatch control treatments and four fertilizer programs. Treatments were started in early 1968 and data collection started in 1970 and continued on a monthly basis through 1974. Significant differences occurred each year with one or more of the variables." |
