Abstract/Contents: | "Much of Virginia lies within the climatic transition zone between adaptation areas of semi-tropical and temperate turfgrass species. Limited by climate, neither of these turfgrass families respond as they do when grown within their appropriate zone of adaptation. Experiments were conducted in Southeast Virginia where the semi-tropical species are better adapted, but subject to long dormant periods from autumn to spring. During these periods, weather conditions are favorable for sports much of the time. The objective of these studies was to determine which cultivars, species, and mixtures of temperate turfgrasses could be used to maintain turf quality on greens and tees during the dormant period. From 1969 to 1972, Tifgreen bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) golf greens were over seeded in early October with selected cultivars of Lolium perenne L., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Festuca rubra L., Festuca ovina L. var. duriuscula, Agrostis spp., Poa pratensis L., and Poa trivialis L. in mixtures or monocultures. In the autumns of 1973 to 1975, Tifgreen bermudagrass tees were overseeded with cultivars of Lolium spp. Turf quality, persistence, and the effect of iron and nitrogen fertilization were studies on overseeded winter turf. The most satisfactory putting turf was obtained with improved cultivars of Lolium perenne L. alone and in mixtures with Festuca rubra and Agrostis palustris Huds. Lolium multiflorum was readily injured with cold temperatures or warm spring temperatures. Poa trivialis was slow to establish in the fall and failed early in spring. Although Festuca rubra and Agrostis palustris were slow to develop in the fall, these species improved turf quality in the spring and persisted into hot weather to provide excellent transition to bermudagrass. Lolium perenne L. cultivars provided superior tees than Lolium multiflorum. The heavier seeding rates gave superior winter turf than lighter overseedings. Lolium perenne cultivars that resisted mower damage and were low in growth habits produced the best spring turf quality. Generally mower damage increased with seeding rate. Increased iron and nitrogen fertilization enhanced appearance and reduced mower injury." |
