Abstract/Contents: | "Agrostis palustris L., 'Penncross' was cultured in controlled environmental chamber studies on 15 x 45 cm soil columns. Five different N fertilizer carriers were evaluated over an eight month period. Two of the N carriers were "rapid release" or soluble materials (urea and ammonium nitrate) applied monthly at 10 g N/m2 and two carriers were 'slow release' materials (UF and IBDU) applied monthly, bimonthly and trimonthly at 40, 80 and 120 g N/m26 respectively. A natural organic 'slow release' carrier (Milorganite) was also included at a monthly rate of 40 g N/m2 and bimonthly at 80 g N/m2. The relative utilization and destribution [distribution] of the applied N was partitioned among the following components at the termination of the study: turf clippings, column leachate, soil, verdue-thatch, roots and residual fertilizer. With the 'rapid release' soluble carriers, the turf clippings and verdue-thatch components accounted for a major percentage of the total N applied. However, with the "slow release" and natural organic carriers, most of the total applied N occured [occurred] in the turf clippings and residual fertilizer." |
