Abstract/Contents: | "Cores, 10 cm in diameter, were taken in October 1975 from three year old Lolium perenne L. var. 'Manhattan' and four year old Poa pratensis L. var 'Baron' turfs. Both had been grown on Penn silt loam under moderate fertility (15 g N/m2/yr.) and were mowed regularly at 3.8 cm. A uniform September application supplied 5 g N/m2 in a 4:1:2 ratio (oxide basis) fertilizer. With exception of a 6-8 mm soil layer all roots and soil were removed. Sod discs were then placed in 10 x 30 cm PVC pipes imbedded vertically in washed mason sand. Differential fertilizer treatments were started in late November using a soluble 4:1:2 ratio (oxide basis) fertilizer. Rates were based on 5 g (1x), 10 g (2x) and 15 g (3x) N/m2. Other treatment regimes [regimens] provided equivalent rates in March, April and May. Experiment of objectives are to determine foliar color and growth responses and effects on root development and persistence through hot summer temperatures. Visual foliar color ratings were recorded at two week intervals. Preliminary results indicate that they correlated with applied nutrient levels. During the 1976 growing season quantitative data on roots and top growth will be ascertained. The experiment is being conducted in Martinsville, New Jersey in open air. (Details will be reported in the final paper)." |
