Abstract/Contents: | "This research was undertaken to determine the effect of time of seeding, nitrogen level, nitrogen timing, mowing height and sad cutting depth upon the botanical composition and sod quality of Kentucky 31 Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) - Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) sad. This sod is popular in the transition zone of the United States and commercial sale of the product is difficult when the Kentucky bluegrass dominates and the tall fescue clumps. Field studies were initiated in the fall of 1972 and 1973 and the 90 % tall fescue 10 % Kentucky bluegrass was seeded at 224 kg/ha. Data was collected through the Spring of 1976. Plant counts were made utilizing a point quadrant technique. Sod shear strength and rerooting ability was measured at 18 to 20 months. Visual quality ratings were taken throughout the course of the study. Preliminary data suggests that mowing height and nitrogen timing are of limited impact in influencing botanical composition. Major impact on botanical composition has been observed with time of seeding and level of nitrogen fertilization. These studies have provided significant insight into the cultural factors necessary for production of high quality Tall fescue - Kentucky bluegrass sad in the transition zone of the United States." |
