Abstract/Contents:"The continuous loading of rootzones by play and maintenance on football fields and golf courses is causing soil compaction. Subsequently, soil physical properties are affected by changing the soil pore structure creating unfavourable growing conditions for turfgrasses. In practice, different aeration methods are used to alleviate these problems. This study was conducted to characterize effects of aeration by (a) high pressure water injection and (b) solid tine cultivation on soil physical properties of different rootzones at different dates of treatment under comparable conditions. The investigations were carried out on a sports turf experimental field. The turfgrass soils consisted of eight different rootzone mixtures with different ratios of soil to sand and additional amendments. Aeration treatments were applied in September 1999, May and September 2000 and soil physical parameters were measured before and after each treatment. The effects of aeration treatments were influenced by actual soil conditions. This indicates interactions between rootzone mixture, date of treatment and kind of treatment. Thus aeration treatments caused in some cases an increase of total porosity, particularly of large soil pores and a decrease of bulk density with little improvements for air permeability. But also opposite effects could be observed. According to penetration resistance, sand dominated and lava-containing rootzones showed more reactions caused by aeration than substrates with higher topsoil ratios. To improve physical properties for turfgrasses and to avoid adverse effects, it is important to evaluate actual soil conditions as a basis for the choice of an appropriate aeration method before application."
