Seven granular formulations with loadings ranging from 0.086% to 0.207% dithiopyr were evaluated in small, replicated plots and strip trials using shaker bottles, Gandy drop, and rotary spreaders. Rates of 0.06-0.50 lb ai/A were tested in single and sequential applications and compared to the performance of the standard dithiopyr 1 EC formulation. Single applications of all products provided excellent full season preemergence control of crabgrass. Low rates of 0.06 0.09 lb ai/A applied in sequentials also provided excellent crabgrass control, depending on the area or geography. Performance of the formulations appeared to be impacted by dithiopyr rate, granular particle size, and subsequent granule distribution or coverage. Other factors affecting performance such as dithiopyr release from the various granular formulations cannot be evaluated in these studies. Other weeds controlled preemergence were goosegrass (Eleusine indica L. Gaertn) oxalis (Oxalis spp ), spurge (Euphorbia spp. ) and others. All formulations also provided early (1-6 leaf stage, prior to tiller) postemergence crabgrass control. All formulations of dithiopyr evaluated were safe to cool season turf such as bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue."
