Abstract/Contents: | "Turfgrass surface area in the U.S. has been estimated to be three times greater than any other irrigated crop. Models of irrigation requirements have been used to estimate the potential use of water by turfgrasses in discrete situations. The actual amount of water use by turf is unknown and complex to understand. Our objective was to document the amount of water required to maintain 50% green cover of turfgrasses commonly used as lawn grasses in key climates across the U.S. Irrigation and precipitation were recorded over two growing seasons (2016 and 2017) in three humid continental, two humid sub-tropical, and one Mediterranean climate locations representing most of the U.S. turf area. Poa pratensis and Festuca spp. were evaluated at the continental climate sites. Cynodon and Zoysia were evaluated at both the sub-tropical sites, plus Bouteloua dactyloides and Stenotaphrum secundatum or P. pratensis and Festuca arundinacea. Cynodon, Festuca, and Paspalum vaginatum were evaluated at the Mediterranean climate site. Evapotranspiration (ET) rates were estimated at each location and compared against the actual amount of water used. Irrigation requirements often differed among grasses at each location, though relative requirements depended on the climate as well as the species. Grasses in the Mediterranean climate required irrigation most frequently, with full ET replacement required for Festuca. Festuca spp., including the fine-leaved species, sometimes required similar or greater amounts of irrigation than P. pratensis. Cynodon required similar or greater amounts of irrigation compared to Zoysia. In several locations, irrigation was rarely required in one of the two years." |
