Abstract/Contents: | "A survey was used to understand the career progression and job/career satisfaction of golf course management graduates over the last 40 years. Data was collected from Kansas State University golf course/turfgrass management graduates from 1978-2017, using an online survey. Five-hundred and twenty-five surveys were distributed, and 236 surveys were returned, giving a response rate of 45%. Fifty-five percent of respondents were between the ages of 30-39, 21% were 40-49, 12% were 50-59, 10% were 20-29, and 2% were over 60. All were male. Only five percent of respondents had been hired as superintendents upon graduation, while 30% were hired as 1st assistant superintendents, 28% as 2nd or 3rd assistants, 21% as irrigation/spray technicians or maintenance crew workers, and 15% chose to take jobs that were not on a golf course. The percentage of graduates hired as first assistants was highest from 1979-1989 (71%); in the 1990's the percentage was 46%, from 2000-2009 it was 36%, and from 2011-2017 it was 42%. There were only 14 graduates who took jobs on golf courses in the highest percentage years (1979-1989), while the lowest percentage corresponded to the years of peak enrollment at Kansas State University, and in turfgrass programs nationwide (2000-2009)." |
