Abstract/Contents: | "St. Augustinegrass cultivars and selections in the national variety trial were evaluated again in 1992 for their relative susceptibility to gray leaf spot caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea. Although gray leaf spot can be controlled by fungicides such as Daconil 2787, they must be applied frequently to give effective control. The identification and use of resistant varieties would be the most effective method of controlling this disease. Gray leaf spot disease pressure was greater at the time of the 1992 evaluation than during the 1990 evaluation. This resulted in the occurrence of higher leaf spot numbers of the more susceptible St. Augustinegrass selections (Table 1). These test results are probably a better indication of resistance or susceptibility of the selections than are those obtained in 1990. The 1992 leaf spot averages were compared statistically by use of the Tukey test which was also applied to the 1990 date (Table 1). The Tukey test is a more conservative comparison and results in fewer groupings. This test is probably more appropriate in efforts to reduce the number of selections to those having the most disease resistance. A previous comparison of the 1990 data used Duncan's test which resulted in six significant groupings compared to only two when the Tukey test is used (Table 1). Comparison of the 1992 data using Duncan's test separated out eight groups compared with only five when Tukey's test was used. The same seven St. Augustinegrass selections (Floratam, FX-261, FX-33, FX-313, Floralawn, FX-10 and TR 6-10) had the fewest leaf spots in both years and are considered to be moderately resistant to leaf spot. Additionally, data from the 1992 test shows that FX-332, Seville and Raleigh should be included in the list of moderately resistant selections. These St. Augustinegrass selections will be evaluated again in 1993 for their reaction to gray leaf spot." |
