Abstract/Contents:The plant growth regulator Sustar (fluoridamid) has shown potential for use as a growth retardant in areas such as roadsides, industrial sites, golf courses and cemetaries. Fluoridamid at 4 lb/acre applied to actively-growing turfgrasses reduced the number of mowings that were required. Cool season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), smooth brome (Bromus inermis), timothy (Phleum pratense) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) gave the best response but certain perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) strains were injured. Fluoridamid is formulated as a 2 lb/gal solution of the diethanolamine salt of the free acid.
