Abstract/Contents: | "Dr. James Beard, in concert with colleagues, graduate students, staff members and his supportive wife Harriet Beard, made major research contributions in turfgrass physiology, ecology, and management. Dr. Beard's investigations into environmental stress on turfgrasses had a major impact in minimizing resource inputs used in turfgrass management. The agronomic programs widely used by practitioners in turfgrass culture today that had their origins in his research are remarkable. As the science progressed and new generations added, augmented and sometimes contested his original findings, the end result was increased efficiency and understanding of the complexities of growing grass for turf. A review of Dr. Beards work in turfgrass physiology, ecology and management is a timely acknowledgement to the foundational principles still evident today." |
