Abstract/Contents: | "Dog urine damage on lawns has recently been shown to be mainly caused by lactic acid in dog urine instead of soluble salts. The objective of this field study was to compare commonly used turf species (creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, strong creeping red fescue, tall fescue, zoysiagrass, and bermudagrass) with two cultivars of each species for their relative tolerance to dog urine using lactic acid at 35 g L-1 in the screening. Additionally, 29, 9 and 26 cultivars of kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue were compared. In general, bermudagrass and zoysiagrass were more tolerant to lactic acid than the cool-season grasses. Tall fescue, creeping red fescue, perennial ryegrass, kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass demonstrated tolerance to lactic acid in that order. However, large variation of lactic acid tolerance exists within species. Each species had cultivars ranked as tolerant to dog urine with < 15% green color density decrease and < 80% phytotoxicity. These cultivars were 'Arid 3' 'Ruby', 'Green Label', 'Jaguar 3', 'Aries', and 'Justice' in tall fescue, 'Accent II' and 'Fairway' in perennial ryegrass, and 'Super Glade' and 'Nu Destiny' in Kentucky bluegrass. Using tolerant species or cultivars to minimize dog urine damage in lawns can be one of the practical options." |
