Abstract/Contents: | "Annual bluegrass (Poa annuaL.) is a problematic weed of bermudagrass (Cynodonspp.) and zoysiagrass (Zoysiaspp.) golf course fairways and roughs during winter and early spring. A survey of Tennessee golf courses was conducted to better understand the extent of herbicide resistance in annual bluegrass infesting these areas. Ninety golf courses were surveyed from 3 January to 14 February 2018. A single hole at each course was randomly selected and annual bluegrass was mechanically harvested from fairways and roughs when density exceeded 10 plants m-2. Harvested plants were cultured for seed collection with progeny screened for resistance to glyphosate, foramsulfuron, prodiamine, and simazine. In postemergence screens, annual bluegrass phenotypes were grouped into the following categories based on percent survival: resistant (>30% survival), segregating for resistance (5 to 30% survival), susceptible (< 5% survival). In preemergence screens, phenotypes were deemed resistant when < 20% of plants exhibited symptoms of mitotic inhibiting herbicide treatment (e.g., club roots), whereas those with >90% of plants showing symptoms were deemed susceptible; those in the intermediate grouping were classified as populations segregating for resistance. Differences among groupings were determined in R (v. 3.5.1) using Fisher's Exact Test at α= 0.05. Seed germination, seedling vigor, and aboveground biomass were also assessed on all phenotypes. We documented that 64% of annual bluegrass on Tennessee golf courses had some degree of resistance (i.e., were not susceptible) to glyphosate. Similarly, 58% of the phenotypes collected in this survey had some degree of resistance to prodiamine while 21% of phenotypes had some degree of resistance to foramsulfuron. Our results provide baseline data on the current status of herbicide resistance within annual bluegrass populations of Tennessee golf courses and can be used in the future to delineate the effectiveness of resistance management education programs developed for turfgrass managers." |
