Abstract/Contents: | "The historical practice of applying a consistent rate of nitrogen fertilizer biweekly on golf course fairways regardless of weather or turfgrass growth response can potentially over or under apply nitrogen to the fairway. Remote sensing can be used to measure turfgrass reflectance which could be used to create precision nitrogen fertilizer prescriptions to minimize over or under applications of nitrogen. The objectives of this study were to determine the reflectance and turfgrass growth response of a creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) fairway under different nitrogen and irrigation management strategies. This study was replicated in 2018 and 2019 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln Nebraska on a creeping bentgrass fairway mowed three times weekly at 0.953 cm. The study was a randomized complete block split plot design with four replications. Main treatments consisted of two irrigation treatments (non-irrigated and irrigated at 80% ET), and split treatments were the six nitrogen fertilizer rates (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kg N ha-1 every 14 d). Turfgrass reflectance, clipping yield and visual quality were measured and rated on a bi-weekly basis during both years of this study. The correlation between the turfgrass growth response and reflectance were determined to better understand the remote sensing technologies can be used to optimize nitrogen fertilizer applications on golf course fairways." |
