Abstract/Contents: | "The golf course industry is under increasing public pressure to improve environmental impacts by reducing management inputs, particularly irrigation. Precision irrigation is a viable strategy; however, in practice, adoption of soil moisture sensors and mapping technologies necessary for implementation has been slow. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that currently available technologies can provide golf course superintendents with appropriate, actionable information resulting in significant water and cost savings relative to conventional irrigation scheduling methods. Research was initiated in 2019 at Edina Country Club in Edina, MN. Two course surveys were conducted using the Toro Precision Sense 6000, a mobile, multi-sensor data acquisition unit, to simultaneously measure thousands of georeferenced soil moisture (% volumetric water content) data points for generating spatial maps of soil moisture variability across fairways. Nine fairways were selected for the study and placed into similar groups of three, where each group is considered a replication. One of three irrigation treatments will be applied 2019 through 2021 to fairways within each group: soil moisture sensor-based, evapotranspiration (ET)-based, or traditional. For soil moisture sensor-based treatments, irrigation management zones were delineated around individual irrigation heads within fairways using Thiessen polygons. Soil moisture maps were used to create soil moisture classes within delineated zones, and heads within each class will be programmed to run together. One in-ground soil moisture sensor has been installed within each class in the fairways. Irrigation will be allowed within a class once plant available water (determined from dry downs) has been reduced 50% (measured by in-ground sensors). The applied depth will be the lesser of the total forecasted ET before the next forecasted rainfall, or the amount required to return soil moisture to 75% total plant available water. For ET-based treatments, 70% of reference ET will be replaced every three days. Finally, for traditional treatments, the superintendent will be asked to irrigate as they typically would. Total depth of irrigation applied will be recorded for each treatment and totals will be quantified and compared on an area basis." |
