Abstract/Contents: | "Traffic stress tolerance is important on recreational and sports turf. The objective of this field trial was to evaluate the response of Kentucky bluegrass to traffic during autumn. Eighty-nine entries comprising the 2017 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) test were seeded in September 2017 on a loam in North Brunswick, NJ. Traffic was applied using a combination of the Rutgers Wear Simulator (RWS) and the Cady Traffic Simulator (CTS) as a strip across Kentucky bluegrass entries during autumn 2018. Thirty-two passes of the RWS (4 passes wk-1) and CTS (4 passes wk-1) were made for 4 wk (26 Sep. to 17 Nov. 2018). Uniformity of turf cover was visually assessed using a 1 to 9 scale and green cover was determined by digital image analysis (0 to 100% scale) at the conclusion of traffic. Data were analyzed as a 2 (No traffic and Traffic) x 89 (Entries) factorial strip-plot design with three replications. Traffic reduced the uniformity of turf cover and green cover of Kentucky bluegrass. Uniformity of turf cover averaged 8.7 and 5.3 for No Traffic and Traffic plots, respectively. Green cover averaged 91% and 60% for No Traffic and Traffic plots, respectively. The traffic effect interacted with Kentucky bluegrass entry for uniformity of turf cover and green cover. Entries with the best uniformity of turf cover and green cover after autumn 2018 traffic were Barvette HGT, Prosperity, PST-K15-172, J-1138, NAI-A16-3, BAR PP 7K426, NAI-14-178, After Midnight, A-16-17, BAR PP 71213, and PST-K15-167." |
