Abstract/Contents: | "An emphasis of our turfgrass breeding program is to develop environmentally sustainable zoysiagrasses that have tolerance to large patch disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani (AG 2-2 LP) as well as cold hardiness. This project is a collaboration between Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Kansas State University and Purdue University. In an effort to reduce the use of fungicides on golf courses, lawns and landscape, the Texas A&M AgriLife - Dallas breeding team developed 2,858 new hybrids in 2011/2012 by crossing selected parental lines exhibiting large patch tolerance, fine or intermediate leaf texture, good turfgrass quality and cold hardiness. These hybrids were tested at three locations (Dallas, TX; Manhattan, KS and West Lafayette, IN) from 2012 to 2014 (two years of turfgrass quality and winter recovery data). The 60 best hybrids underwent more extensive testing at nine locations across a wide range of environments for another three years. Replicated plots of each of these 60 selected hybrids were inoculated with LP in the fall of 2016 at KS and AR. Sixteen hybrids had statistically less large patch compared to Meyer and were statistically similar or better than Meyer for winter injury, spring greenup, and turf quality. In 2018, the 10 best hybrids were chosen based on their Turf Performance Index representing a summary of spring green up, winter injury, monthly turfgrass quality, large patch tolerance, and percentage establishment across all nine locations. These top 10 hybrids are currently undergoing final stages of testing in three locations, Dallas, TX; Manhattan, KS and West Lafayette, IN. Data will be presented for turf quality, large patch tolerance, cold hardiness, as well as tolerances to drought, shade and billbugs." |
