Abstract/Contents:"The resistance of several hundreds of varieties and lines of spring wheat, barley and oats to Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Macrosiphum avenae (F.) was studied in pot tests in Finland. The fecundity and length of life of the aphids were taken as criteria. Both aphids reproduced abundantly on all the varieties and lines. M. avenae produced significantly fewer progeny and lived for a significantly shorter time on one variety of oats (Nip) than on the other cereals tested but no other significant differences were observed. No differences were observed between strains when 28 of R. padi and 35 of M. avenae were reared on spring wheat, barley or oats. R. padi reproduced on a wider range of plants in the families Gramineae, Cyperaceae and Juncaceae than did M. avenae (cf. RAE/A 62, 1863). Avena fatua was at least as favourable as oats for the reproduction of R. padi. M. avenae reproduced as well as on Poa annua and Bromus secalinus as it did on oats, but less well on other species of Poa and Bromus."
