Abstract/Contents: | The results of a research program on the establishment of vegetation on highway backslopes in Iowa are discussed. The results indicated that native midwestern grass-legume mixtures could be used, as well as native prairie grass in the western half of the state for erosion control on highway backslopes. The following topics are discussed: 1) Considerations involved in the use of native midwestern grasses for highway purposes; 2) The original home of native midwest grasses; 3) Dominant grasses of native midwestern prairies; 4) Soils building and soil holding properties; 5) Establishment and maintenance of stands; and 6) Utilization. |
