Abstract/Contents: | "'Meyer' zoysiagrass is widely used on golf courses in the U.S. transition zone and is recognized for its low-maintenance requirements. However, it produces seedheads in late spring, which deteriorates aesthetic quality and increases mowing costs. Recent research showed that using a plant growth regulator, ethephon, can suppress seedheads when applied in autumn. However, the results are erratic and more information is needed to determine effective ethephon application timing. The objective was to determine if a growing-degree day model could be used to identify the optimum application timing of ethephon for 'Meyer' seedhead suppression. To develop a model, a field study was conducted at four locations: Manhattan, KS; West Lafayette, IN; Rogers, AR; and Knoxville, TN in 2018. A follow-up study was conducted in Manhattan, KS in 2019. The treatments consisted of 10 to 12 timings of ethephon ranging from August to December, applied once at 3.8 kg ha-1, and an untreated control. Seedhead suppression was determined by counting seedheads in a 50 by 50 cm randomly selected area. Daily growing degree days (GD) were calculated starting on 1 August using an equation, GD = [(Tmax + Tmin)/2 - 5] where Tmax and Tmin are daily maximum and minimum air temperatures ( 0C), respectively. To best describe the variability in the seedhead suppression two models were evaluated: 1) a second-degree polynomial model; and 2) a Gaussian model. The Gaussian model had smaller Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and root mean square error (RMSE) values than the polynomial model, suggesting better goodness of fit. Both the models will be cross-validated through an independent study and the final model will be selected based on the results of cross-validation. A functioning model will be useful to golf course superintendents for determining the optimum application date of ethephon to suppress seedheads in Meyer zoysiagrass." |
