Abstract/Contents: | "The ability to predict the N mineralization potential of any turfgrass site and its expected response to N fertilization would be a valuable tool in nutrient management. The Solvita Soil CO2-Burst (CO2-B) and Soil Labile Amino-Nitrogen (SLAN) tests can rapidly measure the biologically active C and N fractions in soil organic matter. The objectives of this study were to 1) Determine if CO2-B and SLAN concentrations are correlated to creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) fairway turf quality (visual color, density, and overall quality; NDVI, DGCI, and DIA cover) and growth responses (clippings yields), and 2) If concentrations are correlated to bentgrass fairway turf responses in Objective 1, categorize the responsiveness to N fertilization as a function of soil test results. The experiment was set out in a split-block design with traffic (with/without) as the horizontal factor and 10 rates of N (from 0 to 110 kg N ha-1 as compost incorporated prior to seeding then after establishment applied yearly as organic fertilizer) as the vertical factor with three replicates. There was also a standard treatment of soluble urea applied at 10 kg N ha-1 every 21 d for a yearly total of 110 kg N ha-1. The results from 2019 and 2020 show that all responses increased with N rate. All response variables were moderately to strongly correlated to the SLAN and CO2-B concentrations. When combined across all variables and years, there was a 90% or greater probability of equaling or exceeding the response of the standard treatment when CO2-B and SLAN concentrations were > 193 mg L-1 and > 374 mg kg-1, respectively. The data suggest that creeping bentgrass fairway soils can be categorized based on their response potential and this should help guide N fertilization by adjusting rates according to CO2-B and/or SLAN concentrations." |
