Abstract/Contents:"Zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) is a warm-season turfgrass used on lawns and golf courses in the transition zone and southern United States. Zoysiagrasses have become popular in part because they require fewer inputs and offer enhanced cold and shade tolerance compared to bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.). Continued turfgrass breeding efforts have sparked an interest in zoysiagrass for use on putting greens. However, a limitation of zoysiagrass is its relatively slow establishment from sprigs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of planting date and phosphorus fertilizer rate on the vegetative establishment of Prizm zoysiagrass (Z. matrella) sprigs in the transition zone. Four planting dates (April, May, June, and July) and three phosphorus fertilizer timings (24 kg P2O5 ha-1 either every two or four weeks and a non-treated control) were evaluated in a field experiment in 2020 and 2021. Sprigs were planted at a rate of 109 m3 ha-1. Beginning one week after each planting date, turfgrass coverage was estimated weekly until plots reached 90% coverage. In general, establishment rate increased with later planting dates. However, in both 2020 and 2021, sprigs planted in July did not reach 90% coverage in the same growing season. Additionally, sprigs planted in June reached 90% coverage by the end of the growing season only in 2021. In 2021, sprigs planted in June reached 90% coverage approximately 62 days after planting whereas those planted in April averaged 90% coverage 115 days after planting. Establishment duration among phosphorus treatments every two or four weeks were largely similar. These results imply that zoysiagrass sprigs should be planted in the transition zone no later than May to ensure complete establishment during the same growing season. Planting rates greater than 109 m3 ha-1 could further hasten establishment and allow sprigs to be planted later in the growing season."
