Abstract/Contents: | "Turf-type tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus) is becoming more prevalent throughout many regions where cool-season lawns are planted. While there are numerous benefits to planting turf-type tall fescue, it is susceptible to brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani AG 2-2 IIIB) which can severely damage the turf during the summer months. Maintaining seasonal plant vigor through judicious fertilization is one-way turfgrass managers can help minimize pest damage and pesticide use. Conventional wisdom regarding lawn nutrition, however, often suggests not applying summer nitrogen (N) for fear of disease outbreaks. A two-year field study was conducted in West Lafayette, IN to determine the influence of spring and summer applied N using various rates and sources on brown patch severity in a tall fescue lawn. Three nitrogen fertilizers [urea, polymer-coated urea (PCU), and composted turkey litter (CTL)] were applied between April and July, totaling 61.3, 122.5, and 245 kg N ha-1. Each treatment was compared to a standard lawn fungicide control and non-fertilized control. All plots were inoculated with a locally sourced R. solani isolate at the end of May. Visual ratings for seasonal appearance/turf quality (1-9=best scale), percentage leaf blight (0-100%), and area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated. Prior to brown patch incidence, urea and PCU at 122.5 and 245 kg N ha-1 increased turf quality. Nitrogen source and rate did not increase brown patch symptoms compared to the non-fertilized control. Slight reductions in AUDPC were observed with the high rate of CTL compared to the non-fertilized control. None of the treatments provided an acceptable reduction of brown patch symptoms compared to the fungicide control. This study demonstrates regardless of N-source, moderate spring and summer N should not be avoided to reduce brown patch in this turf." |
