Abstract/Contents: | "Turfgrasses are an important part of the sustainability principles of planet, people and profit. For the planet, they sequester CO2, cool the environment in cities, clean water and prevent soil erosion. People rely on turfgrasses for many of their recreational activities and for green space. The production, care and usage of turfgrass spaces provide jobs throughout the world. Turfgrass breeders select cultivars that require reduced total inputs of water, fertilizer and pesticides while maintaining their functional goals. Breeding turfgrass species presents many challenges since most breeders deal with multiple species and most turfgrasses have high ploidy levels. Many studies on more sustainable turf have looked at only a few species and cultivars. The National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) in many trials includes some with reduced inputs, and recently low input and drought trials, but additional trials with species comparisons should be done to increase knowledge of sustainable turfgrass cultivars. Reduced mowing requirement, allelopathy, beneficial interactions with soil microbes and long term blends with turf legumes are additional goals for sustainability." |
