| Abstract/Contents: | "Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) are two important grasses in the turfgrass industry. Both are widely adapted and dispersed geographically; Kentucky bluegrass as a cool-season sod and annual bluegrass as a common noxious weed. Annual bluegrass is an allotetraploid (2n = 4x = 28) while Kentucky bluegrass is an allohexaploid (2n = 6x = 42) that is often aneuoploid. Lack of genomic tools has hampered the understanding of the genetics of these two species for improvement of Kentucky bluegrass and control of annual bluegrass. To address this challenge, we have developed chromosome-level genome assemblies with gene annotation that serve as a genome reference for each species. The assembled genome sizes were 1.8 Gb for annual bluegrass and 3.9 Gb for Kentucky bluegrass. The genomes and transcriptomes of both species had nearly complete gene coverage, with BUSCO scores over 96%. These assemblies allowed the identification of progenitor subgenomes and provided insight into subgenome characteristics such as repetitive elements, gene distributions, and synteny between subgenomes. The exploration of vernalization genes including Vrn1, Vrn2, FT, and CO within subgenomes allowed the identification of variants that may be associated with flowering time in these two species." |
