Abstract/Contents: | "Golf is one of the most popular sports in the US by participation, but the resources required to maintain golf courses has led to widespread concern over the ecological and environmental consequences of golf course management. The focus of this study was to test three ecosystem models for their accuracy predicting water use on 75 U.S. golf courses, which were separated into five geographic regions (Northeast, Midwest, Northwest, East Texas, and Florida). The models were 1) the USGA spreadsheet-based water calculator 2) a single layer Tipping bucket model and 3) Agro-IBIS simulation model of land surface and ecosystem processes. To quantify golf course water use efficiency, actual water use at a golf course, collected via the University of Wisconsin-Madison Resource Efficiency Survey, was divided by the models predicted water requirement to generate a water efficiency score. The results showed that the models performance was satisfactory overall. However, there were cases that all three approaches overpredicted or underpredicted water requirements depending on the region which shows the importance of modelling accurately parameters such as rooting depth, irrigated area, and depth to water table." |
