Abstract/Contents: | "There is increasing need for comparative data on consumptive water use by warm-season lawn grasses, yet little work of this kind has been performed for the south-central region of the United States. The objective of this study was to quantify actual evapotranspiration (ETa) and to develop crop coefficients (Kc) for cultivars of warm-season turfgrass species including bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy), zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walter) Kuntze], and seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swartz.). Crop coefficients were derived by dividing ETa (measured directly from lysimeter weight change over 48 to 72-hour periods) by reference evapotranspiration (ETo) calculated from the ASCE-EWRI Standardized Method using onsite weather station data (Texas ET network). Data were collected over the 2022 season from non-stressed, well-watered turf. During the early fall, stress coefficients were also determined for the entries by evaluating water use under deficit irrigation regimes. The data show Kc differences among species, which should allow for guiding more accurate irrigation scheduling for the region." |
