Abstract/Contents: | "A stadium's playing surface holds a high level of responsibility as the field conditions could ultimately affect the result of a game and the potential risk of injury to the athletes performing on it. Sports field managers are constantly battling wear caused by athletic traffic to maintain acceptable levels of aesthetics, playability, safety, and consistency. A way to quantify a playing surface is to examine its traction values. Sufficient traction allows for athletes to accelerate, decelerate, change directions, and perform other sport specific motions. The objective of this research project is to evaluate the performance of an NCAA game field over the course of a football season. PEAK, a one-of-a-kind translational traction testing device, will be used to record acceleration and deceleration displacement values at 50 locations across the field following each traffic event (game). Additionally, surface firmness and soil water content will be evaluated after each traffic event. It is expected that surface traction will be significantly affected by traffic events. Also, the relationship, if any, between soil moisture and both surface hardness and traction will be evaluated. These results will allow sports field managers to better understand variation associated with traffic events over the course of a season and ultimately allow athletes to compete at the peak of their abilities." |
