Abstract/Contents: | "The phytotoxin oxalic acid is produced in culture by the dollar spot pathogen Clarireedia jacksonii but the role of oxalic acid in host-pathogen interactions of C. jacksonii is unknown. The objectives of this research were to generate initial insights on the importance of oxalic acid in C. jacksonii pathogenesis. In vitro oxalic acid production was quantified for twenty dollar spot pathogen isolates and a subset with varying levels of oxalic acid production was selected for in planta inoculation experiments with creeping bentgrass. On creeping bentgrass, isolates that produced low amounts of oxalic acid in vitro developed symptoms more slowly and produced less disease overall than isolates with moderate or high relative oxalic acid production. The importance of oxalic acid in C. jacksonii-host interactions was further investigated by quantifying the expression of creeping bentgrass genes related to oxalic acid-mediated host defenses. These genes were induced in both a susceptible and resistant cultivar, further demonstrating the importance of oxalic acid and related defenses in C. jacksonii-host interactions. In further assessing the role of the host in oxalic acid-mediated C. jacksonii-host interactions, preliminary assessments of oxalic acid content in field-grown creeping bentgrass cultivars indicated that those classified as resistant to dollar spot had the lower endogenous oxalic acid content in the field than moderately resistant or susceptible cultivars. Taken together, these data indicate an important role for oxalic acid in C. jacksonii-host interactions and point to oxalic acid as a target for novel dollar spot management strategies." |
