Abstract/Contents: | "St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) sod is produced in the southeastern and gulf-coastal United States. Preemergence herbicides are commonly applied to sod production fields to limit weed competition. These herbicides may negatively impact the growth of the turfgrass. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of contemporary herbicides on St. Augustinegrass grow-in. Our hypothesis was that several commonly used herbicides applied at standard use rates would negatively affect sod grow-in. Field research was conducted at Mississippi State University in 2019 and 2020 as a randomized complete block with four replications. Within each experimental unit (2.32 m2), 10 plugs (232 cm2 apiece) of MS-B-2-3-98 St. Augustinegrass were planted on 12 June 2019 and 14 May 2020. Herbicide treatments were applied on 13 June 2019 and 15 May 2020 with a CO2 pressurized backpack sprayer in a water carrier volume of 374 L ha-1. Treatments included a nontreated check, prodiamine (0.595 kg ai ha-1), pendimethalin (1.66 kg ha-1), oxadiazon (2.24 kg ha-1), S-metolachlor (2.78 kg ha-1), atrazine (2.24 kg ha-1), atrazine + S-metolachlor (2.24 + 1.74 kg ha-1), and dithiopyr (0.42 kg ha-1), as well as the treated check, indaziflam (0.0327 kg ha-1). Percentage St. Augustinegrass cover was assessed weekly. Percentage cover data were regressed using a sigmoidal, variable slope curve to estimate days to reach 50% cover (signified as xd) within GraphPad Prism. In 2020, prodiamine (64d), indaziflam (103d), and S-metolachlor (70d) increased days to reach 50% cover compared to the nontreated (59d). In 2019, prodiamine (112d), pendimethalin (97d), S-metolachlor (92d), atrazine + S-metolachlor (94d), dithiopyr (96d), and indaziflam (model did not converge) increased days to reach 50% cover compared to the nontreated (88d). The commonly used herbicides prodiamine and S-metolachlor increased time to reach 50% cover in both years. Our results will be used to better support St. Augustinegrass sod producers." |
