Abstract/Contents: | "The sudden re-exposure to air following prolonged ice encasement has been previously been associated with winter injury in forage grasses, but relatively little is known about this specific stress in turfgrasses. The objectives of this research were to quantify the physiological effects of reintroducing plants into an aerobic environment following different time points of simulated hypoxia, and to examine interactive effects of hypoxia duration and light intensity on recovery of five cool-season turfgrasses. The selected species included creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), velvet bentgrass (A. canina L.), annual bluegrass (Poa annua), slender creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. littoralis), and Chewings fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. commutata). Plants were established from seed for 8 wk and then moved into growth chambers for cold acclimation at 2°C for 2 weeks. To simulate turfgrass exposure to ice encasement, plants were vacuum-sealed and placed in a growth chamber at 0.5°C in the dark. Plants were then exposed to four treatments representation different time points of hypoxia (0, 2, 4, and 6 wk). At each of these durations, plants were re-exposed air and placed back into growth chambers set to 4°C with light levels of either 100 or 600 µmol m-2 s-1. Plants were monitored during this post-hypoxia period for 7 d, which included measurements of percent green cover, pigment content, lipid peroxidation, and chlorophyll fluorescence." |
