Abstract/Contents: | "Trinexapac-ethyl is a plant growth regulator (PGR) widely used to reduce turfgrass mowing requirements. PGR efficacy is regularly assessed using measurements of clipping yield that researchers quantify in units of weight. Recently, golf course superintendents have started evaluating PGR efficacy by measuring clipping volume. Field research was conducted to evaluate the relationship between clipping weight (g) and clipping volume (mL) following trinexapac-ethyl applications to hybrid bermudagrass (C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy, cv. 'Latitude 36') and manillagrass (Zoysia matrella, cv. 'Trinity' and 'Zorro') golf course fairways. Four experimental formulations of trinexapac-ethyl were initially applied on 13 June 2022 and 12 June 2023 to plots (1.5 m2) organized in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Sequential applications each year were made on 14-day intervals; three total applications were made annually. All PGR treatments delivered trinexapac-ethyl at 97 g ha-1 (11.4 fl oz/A) and non-treated check plots were included for comparison. Each year, clippings were collected twice weekly with volume assessed via a graduated cylinder; weight was quantified after drying clippings in a forced-air oven for 48 hours at 105 C (221 F). Clipping weight and volume were closely associated (R2 = 0.86) on hybrid bermudagrass maintained as a golf course fairway, whereas this relationship was less pronounced on manillagrass (R2 = 0.68). Future research to further explore this relationship on manillagrass is warranted." |
