Abstract/Contents: | "Environmental characteristics contribute to the varying performance of the genotypes across environments, and they can be used to predict the performance of genotypes in non-tested locations. Therefore, it is important to quantify the effects of environmental covariates on species performance for economic traits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of diverse environmental factors on bermudagrass (Cynodon Rich. species), St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walter) Kuntze), seashore paspalum (Paspalum vaginatum Swartz) and zoysiagrass (Zoysia Willd. species) breeding lines from the breeding programs at Oklahoma State University, University of Georgia, North Carolina State University, Texas A&M University, University of Florida, and University of California. Field trials arranged as randomized complete-block designs were planted at research facilities of the above-mentioned universities in 2020. Hundreds of breeding lines of each species and commercial cultivars have been evaluated in nurseries and advanced trials. The percentage of green cover was evaluated in the establishment year using visual ratings and images collected via Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Canopeo. Climatic, soil, and geographic data were collected using EnvRtype-R and SoilType-R. The phenotypic data was analyzed using a mixed model approach, and cross-validation was performed to select environmental covariates using the elastic-net regression model. The heritability was above 0.5 for the majority of locations in advanced and nursery trials, except for the seashore paspalum advanced trial and the St. Augustinegrass nursery trial. The most relevant environmental covariates ranged across species. The variables percent of clay, the effect of temperature on radiation use efficiency, latitude, total precipitation, dew/frost point temperature, and wind speed were selected in most models. Future analysis will use environmental covariates to investigate its effects on other evaluated traits, define breeding zones, and recommend cultivars for non-tested locations." |
