Abstract/Contents: | This study involved an overall comparison of the effects of typical field growing conditions on root hair density and viability. Three genotypes were used for this comparison: Pensacloa bahiagrass, Tifway bermudagrass, and Texas Common St. Augustinegrass. The root hair densities for these three species ranged from 16 to 5 root hairs per millimeter root length on a 45 degree arc of the root. Generally, Pensacola bahiagrass was characterized by a higher density of root hairs that were more viable than observed for the bermudagrass and St. Augustinegrass. Texas Common St. Augustinegrass showed no variability in root hair density with longitudinal depth. While in both Pensacola bahiagrass and Tifway bermudagrass, there was an observed decline in root hair density with depth. Root hair densities for the whole plant were significantly different for all three environments, with the Glasshouse producing the greatest density and "Field" producing the least. The relative root hair density rankings of the three genotypes remained the same under each of the growth conditions. |
