Abstract/Contents: | The need for minimal maintenance bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) cultivars has dictated a reassessment of the commercially available bermudagrasses. Results generated from this assessment also will provide detailed background information concerning the available germplasm which may be of value in future breeding programs. Visual turfgrass quality ratings were made on a a biweekly basis throughout the growing season by two scientists. Visual estimates of turfgrass quality were based on a composite of two primary components: (a) uniformity of appearance and (b) shoot density. Tifway, Tifgreen, Santa Ana, and U-3 have consistently been rated among the highest for the last 11 years; with Tufcote and Arizona Common among the lowest. Data indicate several possible cultivars, such as FB-119 (FLoraTeX) and Texturf 10, as prime candidates for use in low maintenance situations as they exhibit superior nitrogen stress tolerance. Those commercially available cultivars that have consistently shown early spring greenup were Tufcote, U-3, FB-119 (FLoraTeX), Vamont, and Midiron; while Midway, Santa Ana, Sunturf, and Tifway are in the late category. Four commercially available cultivars, Texturf 10, Santa Ana, Tifway, and FB-119 (FLoraTeX), have exhibited good late fall color retention. Midiron, Tifdwarf, and Sunturf consistently discolored early in the fall. |
